147 replacement brings improvements in quality

On sale Summer 2010
From £16,000 (est)

After nine years on sale, Alfa Romeo is finally set to replace the 147 with this smooth looking hatchback named the Giulietta. The carmaker hopes this new model will be strong competition for the likes of the Ford Focus, Mazda3 and the Volkswagen Golf, but with an added dash of Italian flair. There will be five engines available from launch – all of which are turbocharged. There are two petrol choices – a 1.4-litre producing 120bhp or the 1.4-litre MultiAir with 170bhp. Diesels include a 1.6 JTDM with 105bhp or the 2.0 JTDM producing 170bhp. A range topping 1750 TBi engine with 235bhp, which made it’s debut in the 159, will be added later. It will also feature the DNA (Dynamic, Normal and All Weather) system currently found in other models in the Alfa range. This allows you to alter the performance of the engine, steering and stability control systems depending on the driving and road conditions.
