An interesting device M3i lately released. The Optical Pickup is for now the most comfortable and efficient way to use your guitar as a MIDI controller. Everyone who tried to do this the regular way faced the problem of huge delay, which made it almost impossible to record something properly. The gadget above does not convert string vibrations into digital signal, but uses the Laser Pitch Detection (LPD) system.
